katie rohrbacher

(Traumatic Brain Injury - TBI) In 2003, at just 15-years old, Katie Rohrbacher was in a car accident that left her in a coma and in a state of paralysis. Katie was a multi-sport athlete at the time and this accident forced her to re-learn things most of us take for granted—like sitting up, speaking, writing, and walking.

Katie’s recovery was described as slow, however, her spirit was and continues to be incredibly positive. Katie has a “can do attitude" which, along with an amazing support group, has enabled here to make significant strides in both her personal and physical abilities.

Even though Katie’s life was forever changed, anyone who interacts with Katie is always rewarded with a radiant smile that lifts the spirits of everyone around her. Mardi, Katie’s trainer, describes her smiles as “contagious,” and you can see just that as everyone in the Fighting Back gym fist bumps and cheers Katie on during her workouts! From the moment Katie enters the gym, she is out of her wheelchair walking, squatting, and even boxing (watch out for the left-hook!). She makes exercising fun, singing, “how low can you go” while doing squats and reassuring her trainer with a “thumbs-up” and an “I got it” comment.

Katie’s Mom explained that she strives to keep her active and involved. Multiple times a week, Katie rides and shows horses at Thorncroft, attends physical therapy at ReMed, volunteers at the front desk of the local YMCA, and works out at the Fighting Back Gym. All of these activities help develop her core strength to enjoy more extreme activities like skiing, rock climbing, and surfing with her trainer, Mardi, through an organization called PCAS. At any of these activities, you will be sure to see her Mom, Dad, and other family members supporting and cheering Katie on.

Katie has made incredible strides, she is an inspiration to all, and the epitome of the recipients of the Fighting Back Scholarship nominee, being honored for her strength, perseverance, and courage.
